Banksy started out as a free hand graffiti artist, spraying murals on walls around Bristol in the late 1980’s. However by this time Banksy hadn’t even been created. It wasn’t until after a couple of close run-ins with the local police that Banksy decided that in order not to get caught while painting, the time on the scene needed to be dramatically cut down. This is when Banksy thought of stenciling the designs, because the majority of the time can be spent at home preparing stencils and then quickly painted on scene. It wasn’t long before the stencil became Banksy’s trade mark style which people can recognize today.
Banksy is a very political artist, who uses their artworks to voice an opinion to the unsuspecting public. The ideas being voiced through these paintings are generally to do with: anti-war themes, political themes, world peace, and anti-establishment.
There is much speculation as to who the graffiti artist Banksy actually is. Only a small group of family and trusted friends actually know for sure who this infamous artist is, however in 2008 the British news paper ‘The Mail’ released an article claiming to have unmasked Banksy. After much investigation ‘The Mail’ claims that Banky’s real identity is that of Robin Gunningham, a 35 year old Bristol local.
